I joined HCL as a Fresher in 2011.

I did not have specific goals or plans during the initial days.

Got trained in C# development during the initial 3 months, so I thought would get an C# development project thinking like most people.

After couple of months got assigned to an project but it was into different technology which was quite old and many of us would not have heard it — Informix4GL.

Although the technology is old, I got very good exposure to working with many Experienced colleagues, Leads and Managers who are quite friendly.

Got good hand’s on working in Unix, although the coding work was very limited and there were mostly changes in documentation for the Insurance closed book project that I worked on.

After 1.5 years got released to Bench as project was completed and had to look out for new projects. I was working in Chennai and HR gave me two projects — one in Noida for Development role and another in same location for Testing role. So I accepted the Testing role due to my location preference.

In the new project as an Software Tester role, many people has joined along with me and we had our first team meeting for new joinees with the Senior Project Manager. I still remember he was saying that the project is very critical and told us to think in “End User perspective”.

I got to learn a lot of Software Testing Terminology and processes from the Senior Test Engineers while working in the project which was very good experience.

They had been very helpful and good mentors to us in guiding with the business flows, testing activities. Although the project was hectic initially I had learned quite alot in that first project as Software Tester.

I observe many freshers decline the Job offers for the various reasons like preferred role/technology/salaries is not given.

That maybe right decision if we have multiple options in hand.

But if you don’t have options then get started and then plan your learning for which ever Software domain role you want to move on in future after working for 2–3 years.

Get started with an opportunity, if you don’t have too many options.
